GUIDED TOUR OF ISPICA

The two faces of ISPICA: Baroque monuments and Art Nouveau buildings 2 hour tour. € 130

The municipality of Ispica rises in the south-eastern part of the province of Ragusa. The city is also known by the name of Spaccaforno, probably deriving from the union of the Latin term "speca" (cave) with "oven", indicating the shape of some burials found near the town. An early Christian catacomb testifies that the area was already inhabited in the late Roman era, during which the city was called "Hyspicaefundus". Finally, in 1934, it assumed the definitive name of Ispica.

The inhabited center stands today on a hill about 7 km from the sea, but the evidence of its origins is downstream, in what has now become the archaeological sites of Parco della Forza and Cava d'Ispica.
The territory was followed by Sicilian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine dominations. The Arabs reigned there between the tenth and eleventh centuries until the liberation by the Normans led by Ruggero d’Altavilla. After passing under the Swabian and Angevin domination, the territory of Ispica had several lords until it became part of the County of Modica.
